When to seek immediate medical care 🚨

It’s normal to have some aches and discomfort during pregnancy. However, certain symptoms can be a sign that you or your baby need urgent care.

If you notice any of the following, please contact your midwife, doctor, lead maternity care provider or 111 straight away:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Unusual discharge
  • Early waters breaking, or dirty, green, or brown fluid
  • Reduced or no baby movement
  • Tummy pain or cramping (especially during the first few weeks)
  • Sudden hands, feet or face swelling
  • A painful or burning sensation when weeing, especially if you also have a fever or sore back
  • Severe headache that does not go away
  • Your vision becomes blurry, you see flashing lights, spots, or experience double vision
  • A fever over 38°C. Check with a medical professional before taking any medication, and seek help again if the fever lasts more than a day
  • You fall or have any injury to your tummy, even if you feel okay afterwards
  • You are very thirsty but unable to wee
  • You start vomiting again later in pregnancy, especially if you also have pain or a fever
  • You have itching all over your body, particularly if your wee is dark or your poo is pale

If you are ever unsure, it is always safest to reach out for advice.
